THE FULL MONTY

Phoenix Theatre, AZ

Fun is up-front in Full Monty's mission

“Raunchy fun is what Phoenix Theatre delivers in a sprightly and thoroughly entertaining take on The Full Monty.”

“The musical, adapted from the 1997 film about six out-of-work steelworkers who resort to stripping to make a buck, has never been funnier. Director-choreographer Gary John La Rosa milks every bit of humor from the characters' struggles to assert their masculinity, and the audience is ingratiated with the charm and stubborn determination that each guy brings, in his own way, to their fight to survive.”

“ ...these moments are handled with loving simplicity, but Monty is really about its entertainment wallop.”

“The casting couldn't be better...”

“No less spectacular are the men. John Ashley Brown is a winsome loser as Jerry, but all of the steelworkers are a howl as they prepare their very ordinary bodies to bump and grind. You couldn't ask for livelier entertainment – but remember that the humor is lusty...”

“Each time I see this musical adaptation of the popular British film of the same name, I'm startled by how lame Terrence McNally's formulaic script is, but never not impressed by what the cast, in each case, makes of it. In the production currently playing at Phoenix Theatre, that cast is bolstered by players imported from previous productions of the same show, but held aloft by a strong supporting cast of local actors and direction that keeps this overlong two-act chugging along."
